"These words were disrespectful."

Appealing for empathy from a narcissist like Trump was perhaps unwise, but not "disrespectful." Respect has to be earned.

I do agree however that Trump is not unclear about his and Putin's aims. He wants to consolidate Russian territorial gains at no further cost to Russia while leaving to door open for additional coercion in the future.

I wonder why you don’t start your quote with quoting what Trump or Vance said before Zelensky’s first statement that you quote.

It’s not the Ukraine war. It’s a Russian war on Ukraine, which Trump and Putin are now converting the war against Europe. Expect them in March to discuss how to split Europe into 2 zones of their dominance.

“Zelensky owed Trump at least that sort of basic deference.” Zelensky “owed” Trump nothing. What has Trump done for Ukraine except to set up a meeting with the government that invaded it - a meeting that will exclude Ukraine. As I recall, Trump called Zelensky a dictator and lied about his level of support within Ukraine. I guess Trudeau owes the same kind of deference to Trump by not pushing back on the constant claims that Canada is the 51st state.

More disrespect from Zelensky, this time aimed directly at Trump

Speaks truth to power.
