Remarks by Senator Vance
Delivered on camera
My fellow Americans—
The United States was once a colony.
We were the first people since antiquity to rise up and throw off the chains of European imperialism. Our revolution lit a fire that spread across this hemisphere. Not long after our victory, the nations of South America rose up against Spanish rule.
While we were torn apart by civil war, France seized the moment to invade Mexico—installing an Austrian archduke on the Mexican throne. But when our union was restored, so too was our strength. Our industries surged, and Canada began its own path to independence from the British Crown.
For 150 years, peace in the Western Hemisphere has walked hand-in-hand with American strength.
And now—it is Greenland’s turn.
It is time for Greenland to throw off the last vestiges of European rule.
It is time for Greenland to chart her own course—free, sovereign, and strong.
It is time for Greenland to develop her natural wealth not for Copenhagen, but for Greenlanders.
And America stands ready to help.
We bring ingenuity.
We bring deep pools of capital.
We bring respect for sovereignty and self-determination.
Greenland can get a better deal than Denmark has given it. And I’m proud to say: the President has authorized me to declare that the United States will guarantee the sovereignty of an independent Greenland.
It is time to complete the work of decolonization.
It is time for Greenland to stand on her own.
And it is time for the nations of the Western Hemisphere to welcome a new neighbor—proud, independent, and free.
Thank you
